One reviewer complained they expected a more modern book. Really? This is a volunteer-scanned version of a book published in 1906! And therein lies its strength. The Awakening of China gives fascinating firsthand insights into the rich historical forces, good and evil, that literally drove China into the abolition of the Empire, the establishment of a Republic, and into the arms of the Communist Party (when the West gave it little choice for anything else, unfortunately).
Whether you agree with the author's slant or not (and no author is perfectly objective; history is always told by the victor's--and their countrymen), it really is an eye-opener. And can't beat the price.
You can, of course, download this book, and millions of others, for free from Gutenberg.org and other sites, but the advantage of getting the free book on , at least for me, is I can use WhisperSync to synchronize this book's notes, bookmarks, etc. on my different devices (PC, tablet, Smartphone--which in my hands is not all that smart), Pretty good, and all for free, even for those of us without an actual device. And since the last incarnation of the free software, we can cut and paste from the books into our notes, which is a great advantage for my work.

This is a classic to understand China from an American missionary adviser, W.A.P. Martin who spent a good life and died in China. Basically, this book is his knowledge about China. It is interesting that he commented that China was uncivilized in the Boxer and no inventions and innovations under the equal opportunity and democratic examination for the selection of the best and the brightest candidates for government officials. When Zhang He of Ming Dynasty led his Dragon Fleets around the world seventy years before Columbus, America was still a barren land to be explored.
It was the European imperialists and colonists who pushed opium into China and accused Chinese as Sick Man of Asia. It was the Pope, a foreign entity used religion to interfere China internal affairs of honoring Confucius and ancestors and China kicked missionaries out by Ching Emperor. This is why Protestant Robert Morrison came to China in British East India Company boats. Chinese people regarded opium and foreign religion were toxic to body and mind. There were many religious incidents which led to disputes between local and converts who called for missionary's country military support. All Foreign Powers demanded the humiliating "Extra-Territoriality" i.e. foreigners were not subject to the laws and court of China. America got "Most Favor Nation"Claus, i.e. they will share whatever benefits whenever and whoever can squeeze from China.. The 1905 boycott of American goods was due to the ill-treatment of Chinese in America especially by the Congress passed 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act.
Martin talked about overthrowing the corrupt Manchus government and cutting up China like a melon. The latter comment inspired many late comers.
Martin envisioned that with education reform, introduction of science and religion, the endeavor of a few generations, China would stand firm among world countries. He is right as China rises strong after Deng's opening in 1979. It is the favorite demonized object by American politicians. They
forgot China was American comrades in arm in WW II fighting the Japanese.
This is a good book to read so that American will understand the past and prepare for the future.
I was expecting a more modern analysis. History buffs might enjoy this but I found it slow going. Not my cup of tea.

Great Stuff!
Fascinating to read one missionary's impressions of China in its transitional period between 19th and 20th centuries. Martin provides great in-depth glimpses to the regional differences present across China at the time as well as good commentary on relations between the Chinese and foreigners. Furthermore, he writes in an approachable manner, in terms of a modern reader, not in line with works I've read from his contemporaries.
If you are interested in all things China, this is a go-to read.
