John Mefford has done it again! If you like the Alex Trout series, you'll definitely want to read this book.
Ivy Nash is an Investigator for Child Protective Services. Having grown up in the system, she has a special connection with the kids she tries to help. When one of her charges is accused of murder, she sets out to prove his innocence. With her Police Department Liason, her best friend and a street smart teen, they push until they find the truth.

In Defiance(An Ivy Nash Thriller) is the first book in a continuing series by John Mefford. I could not put this one down, like the rest of them. The story has great developed characters and so many twists and turns that you don’t expect. It really keeps your mind thinking. Just when you think you have it figured out , something happens that you didn’t foresee and it sets you back in your seat. Don’t miss these exciting thrillers by Mr. Mefford. Each one has just a little bit more excitement than the last one.
I couldn't put this book down. It scared me to death. It grabs hold and you can't stop reading until the last page. Keeps you reading as fast as possible. I just don't like having to wait for the next book in a series, never an ending.
From the gripping beginning which gives the reader important background information about Ivy Nash, to an ending which left me anxious for the next book, this is Mr. Mefford's best work yet. I honestly had a hard time putting this one down. The character development is well done for the first of what is known to be a continuing series. I look forward to getting to know Ivy and friends better in future books. I received an advance reader copy of this book. However, I have since bought a copy because it's one I want in my library
Once again, just like in the Alex Trout stories, the story starts right out with thrilling action, continuing to the end. I enjoyed meeting Ivy Nash for the first time, eagerly learning about her background. Of course, I had to compare her character to that of Alex Trout, who is currently my favorite FBI agent. She did well in the comparison. From the way the story ended, it appears that this will be a continuing series. I can’t wait to see what happens next to this superb new character. Just a note, I received a ARC of this story, but, it was so good, I purchased it the day it was released. Another great job by Mr. Mefford. You will not be disappointed if you take a chance and read this book.
In my humble opinion, this is a mixture of Amateur Sleuth, Law Enforcement, Family Drama, and Psychological Thriller genres.
Along with her police liaison, Special Investigator Ivy Nash looks into a case where a foster child is being prosecuted for murder. She believes there is more to the story than what is being told. Will she be able to get to the truth or will someone stop her?
I really think Mr. Mefford does a wonderful job of giving glimpses into Ivy's past and balancing it with her present situation. She is definitely defiant at times but with good cause.
Warning Avoid reading if you are extremely sensitive to violence especially those involving women and children. There is also Adult Language and Situations.
Ivy Nash is the main character IN DEFIANCE. She herself had been put in thirteen different foster homes. Yes, she got the short end of the stick with them all. She was abused in more than 1 way. The last home she was in her foster father was a retired police officer who "fancied" young girls. The foster mother was a meth-head. When Ivy tried to stop him from assaulting her, he fell from the attic door and died. Ivy ran and never looked back. Grew up, put herself through college and is now a counselor for the Child Protective Services. She fights a bit too much for the children's rights and thinks outside the box when it comes to her clients. Which does not sit well with her boss. When one of her 'children' , Megail is charged with killing his foster brother, things didn't feel right with Ivy. She turns to the one person who knows all about her.....her gynocologist and friend Z;. along with Stan from the San Antonio Police Department and Cristina a street wise 17 year old girl. Can they figure out who really killed the boy and why? Who is threatening Ivy? Are they getting too close to the truth and need stopped? What will happen when the truth comes out? Read the book to find out the answers. There is swearing and graphic situations in this book Very fast paced.....so buckle up Buttercup and keep your arm at your sides at all times!!!!
